Calculating Fiber Modes in RP Fiber Power V7
Please make your browser window wide enough to see the video in sufficiently large size.
This video shows you the following within about 10 minutes:
- We first use the simple interactive forms to define the refractive index profile of a fiber and to set up some graphical diagrams for displaying the mode properties of the fiber.
- Then we look in some detail at one of the demo scripts delivered with the software, where the mode properties of a germanosilicate fiber are calculated from its germania concentration profile.
- Another demo file simulates nonlinear self-focusing at high optical power levels in an optical fiber.
The script language easily allows us to implement an iterative procedure for finding a self-consistent solution for the mode intensity profile and refractive index profile, the latter being influenced by the Kerr effect.
In that demo file, it is also shortly demonstrated how to use numerical beam propagation, where the initial beam profile can come from the mode solver.
- It is emphasized that in practice one often does not simply need a tool for calculating mode properties.
In addition, one often needs to apply those mode properties in further calculations, and for such things a highly flexible software like RP Fiber Power is indispensable.
