Modeling in Photonics

Realizing the Transparent Laser

When developing a fiber laser (or in fact any other kind of laser), one of the main challenges is that you cannot simply look into the device in order to see what exactly is going on inside. That makes it difficult, of course, to find out how exactly to fix certain problems and optimize the performance.

Wouldn't it be marvelous if you had a “transparent laser”, where you can easily see e.g. what are the optical intensities and excitation densities anywhere in the fiber, including their temporal evolution with arbitrary resolution? It turns out that this is possible – with computer models of lasers (or e.g. ultrafast amplifier systems), as can be made with our software. These are extremely helpful tools

Presentation on Efficient Laser Development With the Transparent Laser

In the following, we present a 25-minute video, where Dr. Paschotta explains

  • what special challenge you face in laser development,
  • how a computer model can be used to effectively obtain a transparent laser, and
  • how you can in practice work with a laser model, greatly reducing the cost and time required for the development.

Enjoy the video and take home important insights on how to make your laser development more efficient!

Note the convenient controls which appear when you put the mouse cursor on the video while it is playing; you cannot only stop and resume playing, adjust the volume and turn to full-screen playing, but also display a table of contents with which you can get back to certain parts of the video.
